Oil pastel and wax on paper

Last night I sat down with oil pastels to cover this painting. Underneath the pastels is a simple gradation using black watercolors, but I haven’t found the right method to bring that underpainting to the surface. Instead, I have abstracted the vertical lines of a grass field by scraping away the oil pastel and I think the underpainting is starting to come through, but not as obvious and intentional as I am hoping.
